Bellefonte is the county seat and, architecturally, the most interesting town in Centre County. Built up during the iron era and never torn down, it’s a hillside of Victorian houses, a limestone courthouse, and a big spring that gives the town its name — about fifteen minutes northeast of State College.

What is Bellefonte known for?

Its architecture, first. The historic district is dense with Victorian and Federal-era buildings, many of them substantial homes with the woodwork, stained glass and staircases that come with that period. The town also has genuine historical weight: several Pennsylvania governors came from Bellefonte, and the courthouse has anchored the square since the county’s early days.

Then there’s the water. Spring Creek runs right through Talleyrand Park in the middle of town, and it’s one of the better-known wild trout streams in the eastern United States — a genuine draw for anglers. The Big Spring feeds it at the edge of the park.

The borough and much of the surrounding area are served by the Bellefonte Area School District, a separate district from State College Area. Confirm the attendance boundary for any specific address with the district directly before relying on it.
